Fourteen years ago, designer, political scientist and entrepreneur Marisa Fick-Jordaan founded ZenZulu, a design-led craft cooperative based at the BAT Centre in Durban, South Africa. Back then, ZenZulu was a small NGO with few resources and no reputation. Today, it has grown into a dynamic enterprise with global reach renowned for the fusion of contemporary design with traditional craft skills and the creation of innovataive, quality, hand-made objects from South Africa's KwaZulu-Natal province. Its artists employ traditional weaving and beading techniques using telephone and colourful beads to create objects with a modern twist.ZenZulu's work has been featured in numerous international showcases such as Oscar de la Renta's Spring 2008 collection, Design Biennales in France and South Korea, and Milan Design Week, among others. ZenZulu's objects are made to the highest quality standards, eco-friendly and fairly traded and ensure sustainable incomes for over 350 home-based producers. In 2002 ZenZulu received Elle Decoration's International Design Award.
