OllyMolly is a small company based in Paarl, South Africa, run by two imaginative young women, Gemma Cole and Lyndsay McFarlane, with a background in the textile industry. After working as woven textile designers in both fashion and furnishings in the UK, Gemma and Lyndsay moved to South Africa. However, recent years have proved difficult for the textile industry in South Africa due to the increased demand for cheap imports, and as a result, the company where Gemma and Lyndsay worked closed its doors after over 30 years of manufacturing. Inspired by their passion for weaving and a need to find a new focus for their creative energies, the pair founded OllyMolly and design and manufacture woven bags out of recycled and recyclable paper materials. OllyMolly bags are fun, colourful, functional, unique, and hand-crafted.
Located at the Miqlat Center, a 'place of refuge and hope,' OllyMolly contributes to numerous community development programs and trains and supports women in Paarl and the surrounding region. They use donated paper misprints from printing firms, or paper that is bought by the kilo from a local paper recycling plant. A percentage of OllyMolly's profits goes towards providing support for orphans with HIV/AIDS, through Bowy House, a care home located in Paarl.
