The company was founded in the UK in 2001 and moved to San Francisco, California in 2005. BSE's lead investors are TBL Capital and Renewal2 Social Investment Fund, both dedicated to the development of businesses at the forefront of social and environmental innovation.

BSE's Solio designs are hand-held solar charging, lighting and energy storage devices. The products are rugged, reliable and portable and provide affordable mobile power -- replacing conventional wall charging with solar energy capture and storage. Renewable power provided by the Solio BOLT has already brought light to people around the globe, from charging smartphones for business travellers in California to meeting the total power needs of an entire home in rural Kenya.

In Kenya, the Solio solar chargers are leased to families who are then able to replace kerosene or other dirty and often unhealthy forms of fuel, to run LED lights, to provide light, to keep radios playing or to charge cell phones.
